Survival Camping - Go Spend a Week in The Woods

We just got back from our annual camping trip and as always, we picked up a few great survival camping tips. :)

Nothing like being stuck in the woods for a few days to help you figure out what needs to go into your bug out bags!

We normally take a nice pop up tent along to set up for our cooking area and food shelter but someone borrowed it recently and ruined it so we had to improvise a bit and discovered that a few tarps worked wonders. (thanks to a very handyman of a hubby!)

We had three tarps (6x8 and 10x12) and used the biggest one for a roof, and then tied the others to the sides with poles and twine. ALWAYS HAVE A ROLL OF TWINE AND DUCT TAPE in your camping survival kit.

Duct tape came in very handy on a couple occasions on this trip. We took our solar shower along and managed to puncture it on a small tree branch but duct tape fixed it even with water spurting out. Believe me, after you wait for several hours for a nice warm shower, you DON'T want to lose all that nice warm water!

Survival camping is definitely a fun way to learn how to prepare for emergencies or simply to know what needs to be put in your bugout packs. Each time you do it, you will learn something new.

Another thing we discovered is that the small shovels we took along to dig up treasures we find with our metal detectors worked great for taking care of 'business' in the woods. Dig a hole, ---- in the hole, cover it back up. :)

We had a lot of fun, learned even more about emergency survival and got sunburnt!

How To Put A Bug Out Bag Together

The name bug out bag originated from military pilots having what they called a bail out bag; in case of ejection in enemy territory it would contain all the necessary equipment for survival.

The bugout bag is a similar concept except in this case it contains all the survival gear for urban survival.

There are different ways to decide on the bug out bag contents you want to start with. You can
purchase a ready-made kit with all the basics and add your special requirements such as medicines and special dietary supplements.

Before you get started you should first draw up a bug out bag checklist adding all the necessary equipment you will need for a 72 hour emergency. There are plenty of bug out bags of different sizes and value available off the shelf, use the contents lists of these bags to decipher your own personal bug out bag checklist

The very basics any survivalist will have in their survival gear will be:

water for washing and cooking
non perishable food for 72 hours
water purification supplies
cooking supplies
fire starting tool
folding knife

knowledge you could still perish.

How proficient you want to be in your urban survival will reflect in your bug out bag, from the
basic survival gear to being completely self sufficient.

The bag itself or backpack is probably one of the things you should spend some time considering; you need to make sure it is going to be large enough to hold all your survival gear but not too large that you cannot carry it.

It is probably going to get thrown about from time to time so making sure it is
durable and very waterproof is essential.

Make sure your entire bug out gear is going to suit your needs and you have not supplemented
essentials to take onboard luxury items. This is a common mistake. When you finally have your pack together make sure that its contents are checked regularly; there would be nothing worse than finally grabbing your backpack in an emergency only to find the torch batteries are flat or the food has perished.

A bug out bag is the most essential piece of equipment that could save your life in an emergency.

Wilderness Survival Shelters....

When we think "wilderness survival shelter we tend to think of a cave in the snow, or maybe a pile of logs set up for protection, or perhaps even a home in a cave.

There are many ways that you can make a shelter in the wilderness, and it depends of course on what kind of wilderness area you happen to be stranded in..... or plan to escape to when disaster hits.

The method of survival shelter also depends on what time of year it is.
Although the easiest way to have a shelter is to carry one with you, or have one in your emergency survival kit, there are a variety of ways to form emergency shelters in wilderness areas.

With some simple tools and supplies, you can build what the hunters call a portable camp and be all set for all kinds of weather.

No more wet, damp clothes... cooking over a campfire.... bending in half as you get dressed every morning.....

Pneumonic Plague in China

WORLD NEWS UPDATE Pneumonic Plague in China....

A second man has died of pneumonic plague and 10 people are infected in a north-western Chinese town that authorities have sealed off to avoid the spread of the infectious lung disease.

Officials have placed Ziketan and the surrounding part of Qinghai province in quarantine. The local health bureau has urged anyone with a cough or a fever who has visited the town of 10,000 since mid-July to seek treatment.

The lung disease is caused by the same bacterium as bubonic plague. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says it is the most virulent and least common form of plague, capable of killing sufferers within 24 hours of infection. It spreads through the air and can be passed from person to person by coughing.

Survival Knives - What to Look for in the Best Survival Knife

Looking for the best survival knife, is a big deal for some guys, and gals as they are very particular as to what kind of knife they carry with them.

It used to be that nearly all men carried knives with them. And a lot of guys still carry some sort of multi-purpose tool with them, like the Leatherman Skeletool for example.

I am not a guy but I LOVE a good multi-purpose Leatherman tool myself!

It's a shame how so many folks are afraid of knives today. Because of what the movies and media have made knives out to be, it is no wonder, I guess.

But for anybody that is preparing a survival kit, or backpacking trip, or just for the simple handiness of having a good all purpose knife at your disposal..remember that a survival knife is one of the most important parts of your survival kit.

Let's talk about how to choose the best survival knife...

First of all, here are a few things your survival knife should NOT have or be...

A hollow handle, many folks think one of those knives with a hollow handle, filled with survival gear is the one to choose ... not necessarily as the hollow handle weakens the knife.

Huge oversized Rambo type knife... nope. You won't want that either. It is a far cry from the survival knives used by skilled outdoorsmen.

What is the best Blade Length of the Best Survival Knife

Four to six inches is a good length for the knife blade. Longer than that is too much weight and over-kill. This length has the right mix for size and control.

If you DO need a larger blade knife of some sort, it may be a good idea to add a machette or a hatchet to your pack.

Knife Tang

Here is where the rubber meets the road on choosing the best survival knife.

You want the metal part of your knife to be what is called full tang or narrow tang where the metal blade goes the full length of the knife.

Full tang is where the blade merges into the handle. In many cases the metal or steel is encased on two sides with either wood or leather to be used as a handle.

On some survival knives the handle is left off to make it lighter and more versatile. To the inexperienced, these knives may look bare and unattractive, but the true outdoorsman or survivalist knows better!

Narrow tang is where the steel is narrower and is covered by more handle so to speak.

When you are looking at a survival knife, the best way to tell if it is a good knife is to look at the spine of the knife and make sure you can see the steel running all the way to the end of the handle.

Regardless which knife you choose to add to your survival pack - I would just say, "Make sure you have at least ONE good knife in there. There are hundreds of things a knife will help you with in many situations..."

Pandemic Preparation - For More Than Just The Swine Flu!

First and foremost, it is important to take these pandemic preparation steps EVERY DAY to protect your health:

These are steps we should all have learned as kids!

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.

Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.

Avoid close contact with sick people outside your family members, especially if you have reason to believe they may be a target for the H1N1 virus.

Stay home if you are sick for 7 days after your symptoms begin or until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer. This is to keep from infecting others and spreading the virus further.

Outside of these common precautions, you may want to consider emergency

kits on hand, just in case there would be a city lock-down of a couple days.

Survival Food List - Can't Afford to Stockpile Food??

Everyone should have a survival food list or grocery supply on hand for at least a few months.

Unfortunately, many people are just barely surviving and struggling to make ends meet so stocking up emergency foods is out of the question when the electric bill needs to be paid and fuel put into the car.

Here are a few simple tips to help you get a small food storage started for your family. I know it works because we have done it while on a monthly income of $1000 as a family of six!

We all go grocery shopping and I like to shop sales myself, so here is what I like to do. Allow yourself five bucks to spend towards your survival food list every week. That may not sound like much but what will happen is that as you start building up your emergency food supply, you will find other ways to add to it.

Be careful to only stock up on things that have a fairly long shelf life, and things that you use a lot of. A lot of folks are really worried about their food getting outdated, but you really do not have to worry about that. If you have a pretty good food storage going in about a year, you can start rotating items. (for most of us with families, it is rare that food stays stored for more than a few months anyways!)

For instance, if you use a ton of ketchup and the ketchup is on sale one week, stock up on $5 worth of ketchup. Next week, it may be salt. Get $5 worth of salt.

Try to stick with plastic bottles. It seems almost everything is in plastic these days anyways, but if you have a choise, choose plastic and that way, if you ever have to move everything quickly, you will not have to worry about glass jars breaking, etc.

I know, you can't get pickles in plastic... yet. :) (and I sure like my pickles...)

But you get the idea. What will happen, and it has happened for many others, is that as you start your emergency food storage in the small ways that you can, you will be amazed at how quickly you will start thinking - "Oh, we can make it without ice-cream this week, and get that case of fruit that is on sale instead"... especially if you make a family thing.

Swine Flu in Fort Worth - Schools Closed for How long??

While the Fort Worth schools in Texas will be closing indefinitely, due to Swine Flu outbreak, and the Mexican government is shutting down a whole bunch of activities for a week or so, the rest of the world is watching with bated breath to see what will come of it and where the next outbreak will be.

The World Health Organization has raised its alert level for swine flu to Phase 5, indicating a pandemic could be imminent.

President Obama says that although the outbreak is cause for concern , it is not a cause for panic. So far there has been one death reported in the US that has been confirmed to be Swine Flu and that was in Texas close to the Mexican border.

Fort Worth is taking a lot of precautions, though and not taking any chances. They are closing their schools this weekend for an indefinite period of time after a case of Swine flu was discovered at the school.

While we are waiting and watching, here are a few things we can do to prepare for any kind of flu pandemic:

Take extra care to wash hands and keep sanitary hand cleaner on hand

Stock up on food - have several weeks worth of groceries on hand

Invest in a small 72 hour Emergency kit

Keep a half tank of fuel in the car - in case of having to leave the area for awhile

These are just a few small measures one can take to make life a little easier if there should actually be a quarantine.

Swine Flu Outbreak - Will It Happen??

The United States Government is urging businesses and families to prepare now for a possible Swine Flu Pandemic Influenza outbreak.

They issued guidelines for families and individuals to prepare for this possibility. Their recommendations include a section about stocking a variety of items (such as the folowing) for an extended stay at home.

When an outbreak occurs, city areas may be quarantined for several weeks.

According to the New Yorker Magazine, a pandemic is the viral equivalent of a perfect storm. There are three essential conditions, which rarely converge, and they are impossible to predict. But the requirements are clear.

A new flu virus must emerge from the animal reservoirs that have always produced and harbored such viruses—one that has never infected human beings and therefore one to which no person would have antibodies.

Second, the virus has to actually make humans sick. (Most don’t.)

Finally, it must be able to spread efficiently—through coughing, sneezing, or a handshake.
